Principle editing of ignition coil
The ignition coil consists of a laminated iron core surrounded by two copper coils. Unlike the power transformer, the ignition coil has an open magnetic circuit - the iron core does not form a closed loop around the winding. The energy stored in the magnetic field of the iron core is the energy transferred to the spark plug.
The primary winding has several turns of heavy wire. The secondary winding is composed of thousands of smaller turns of wires, which are insulated with high voltage through enamel and oiled paper insulation layer on the wires. The coil is usually inserted into a metal tank or plastic box with insulated terminals for high-voltage and low-voltage connections. When the contact circuit breaker is closed, it allows the current from the battery to flow through the primary winding of the ignition coil. Because of inductance, current will not flow immediately. The current flowing in the coil generates a magnetic field in the core and the air around the core. The current must flow for a long enough time to store enough energy for the spark on site. Once the current accumulates to the highest level, the contact breaker will open. Since a capacitor is connected at both ends of the coil, the primary winding and the capacitor form a tuning circuit. As the stored energy oscillates between the inductor formed by the coil and the capacitor, the changing magnetic field in the coil core will induce a large current. The secondary voltage of the coil is higher. More modern electronic ignition systems work on exactly the same principle, but some systems rely on charging the capacitor to about 400 volts instead of charging the coil inductance. The opening of the timing contact (or transistor switch) must match the position of the piston in the cylinder, so that the spark can be timed to ignite the air/fuel mixture to extract the most angular momentum possible. This is usually a few degrees before the piston reaches top dead center. The contact is driven by the shaft driven by the engine camshaft, or if electronic ignition is used, the sensor on the engine shaft controls the time of the pulse.
